This week's meeting
The talk by Kevin Mitchell has been postponed until January. Instead, we have a workshop evening: Phil Taylor will demonstrate the advantages of the Affinity processing software, followed by David Chedgy doing likewise for On1 Photo Raw. In addition, Phil has had a tremendous idea which he will present to members at the start of the evening. As a teaser, what he is proposing is a completely new venture, and one which may well appeal to members who (like me) are less confident in their photographic skills - come and listen!

Competition hand-in date
Remember that midnight on Friday is the deadline for submissions for our next competition, digital, on the theme of Travel and Places (see https://www.fromewessexcameraclub.com/2018-19-set-subjects.html for the definition). The competition will be judged on 7th December by Clive Greenland, LRPS, QGPP.

Frome Salon of Photography 2018
The selection took place last weekend, and Mary Maynard and her team worked wonders for two long days, and then ensuring that the results were published in record time.
Visit https://www.fromewessexcameraclub.com/salon.html to be dazzled! Special congratulations are due to Alan Denison, with not one but two commendations in the Open Colour class.

Diary Date
Next Monday, 19th, sees the first of this season's battles, the Calne Multi-Club.

Attached to this e-mail is the menu. Please let Criss have your bookings and choices as soon as you can. Precise costs to follow, but likely to be similar to last year's.

This Season's "Best of the Best" Competition
.... isn't until next May, but it's worth bearing in mind. For the first time, there will be separate Print and Digital trophies. Any image in the top five in internal competitions this season will be eligible to compete (digital from digital competitions, print from print competitions). Stan Wilson has managed to find a rather special judge for this: Leo Rich, ARPS,DPAGB,HonPAGB,EFIAP/g. Hang on to your pics if you're lucky enough to qualify!

This Week's Meeting
One of the highlights of the year! Our three eminent Salon selectors will be talking about and showing us their work.

Change to Programme

The meeting on 16th November is no longer as billed in the Handbook: Kevin Mitchell's talk has been moved to January. Instead, the evening will be a workshop and demonstration of the photographic programmes Affinity and On1 Photo Raw, led by David Chedgy.

The Calne Multiclub Battle
Monday 19th November at the Beaversbrook Sports Centre, Calne SN11 9FL. 7.00pm for a 7.30pm start. We had nearly a 100 images submitted for the battle which had to be whittled down to 10 in total. The selection committee worked tirelessly to select the images that they hope will score 17 or above, to be in with a chance of being in contention to win the competition. We came second last year. Come along and cheer on the troops - it is always an enjoyable evening.

The Competitions Page on the Website
The winning images from last week's competition can be enjoyed, but some are still missing. If you can fill a gap, please send your picture to

This Week's Meeting
The first Print competition of the year will be judged by Mike Hendon, LRPS, from Bath. There has been a bumper entry of 67 images for him to judge.

Thankyou
to the many Club members who turned out for the Camera Fair on Sunday, especially to those who were there at 7 a.m.!

Frome Salon of Photography 2018
has now closed for entries, with takings well up on last year's. There will be an opportunity at next week's meeting (9th November) to see presentations from the three very eminent Selectors who will judge nearly 5,000 Salon entries over the ensuing weekend. Please pencil in Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th, and come along to Beckington if you can.

Mount-Cutting Service - a Special Offer for Members

FWCC member David Weeks has e-mailed to say that he is able to supply a mount cutting service to club members. During last Friday’s meeting our speaker suggested that getting a mount cut could cost £8.00 per mount. Some local shops charge even more. However, as a picture framer with a small business in Warminster, David is able to supply at a cost of £3.50 per cut mount in any colour - overall size 400 x 500. If you are interested, please talk to David at the Club, or contact him on dj.weeks@btopenworld.com.

Talk by Paul Naylor

Frome Salon of Photography 2018
Remember, entrants to the Salon benefit from the most expert possible appraisal of their work, and the chance to be rewarded with the classiest certificates of any Salon imaginable - all for free if you are an FWCC member. But you have only a few more days to take advantage of this benefit: the Salon closes for entries at midnight on Sunday 28th October - THIS SUNDAY! And when you think you have finalised your entry - just check that you really have.

This week's meeting
After the action and excitement of last Friday and Saturday, a complete contrast: John and  Di Tilsley's talk, entitled Photographing in Cold Places, promises to be enlightening and intriguing - and beautifully illustrated.
And now there came both mist and snow,
And it grew wondrous cold:
And ice, mast-high, came floating by,
As green as emerald.

The Camera Fair, this Sunday
8.30 - 1 pm at the Cheese & Grain. Free entry for members. If you can lend a hand, please come and help from 7am onwards (NB - the clocks go back!). If you are helping, please collect an FWCC STEWARD badge from me when you arrive. Also NB - Sunday parking charges now apply, alas.

The Calne Selection, a Message from David
Please note the following ten images were selected to represent the FWCC Club Entry for the Calne Multi Club Battle on Monday 19th November. We had 93 images in total and after two hour's deliberation whittled it down to these ten images: Helicopter - Joel.Baxter;  Dance! - Alan Denison; Bude Sea Pool, High Tide Storm - Mary Maynard; Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao - Loveday Powell; A Boy and his Lion - Joao Diniz Sanches; Nightmare in Whispering Woods - David J. Chedgy; Waiting - Craig Morris; Red Stag Rutting - Andrew Washington; Launched - Alan Denison; Spiky Flower - Loveday Powell.
The following images were very close to being selected, but were just pipped at  the post: Elephants at Ambrose - Martin Bax; Dunnock - Andrew de Mora; Loving Blues -  Sheri o’Reilly; Cleveland Pier - Jon Durrant; Evening Conversation, Luxembourg - Mick Yates; U Bein Bridge,  Amarapura, Myanmar - Stan Wilson.
Congratulations to them all.

A Request for Stourhead Images
from John Parfitt :

"I’m looking for approximately  5 images of Stourhead. The brief is for different seasons and showing iconic features. The resolution must be such as to be capable of being printed at  approximately A1. They will be hung in a prestigious location which I’m not able to disclose until after the selection is made.
There will be little or no licence fee but where they will be hung should be reward enough – it would look good on a photographer’s CV.
If there is an interest, could they email me a low res version of the image to (john@thebetterpicture.com), with the subject Stourhead Images 2018."

A Request for Professional Portraits
Joy Osborn is a professional model living in Frome. She needs to update her portfolio, and is suggesting a win-win arrangement. She says:
"The ideal situation would be if there is no fee either way – i.e. that I get some great new photos for my portfolio and for my agencies to include on their websites, and for the photographer to gain something for their own use. My portfolio with both Source and Mustard is now about two years old so needs an update. If there is a photographer in your membership who might be interested, I’d be very happy to meet informally to explore the possibility of a shoot – when we can both share the sort of work we have done to date and decide whether this would be a mutually beneficial opportunity."
If you'd like to contact Joy, please do so direct on joy.osborn@zen.co.uk.

Paper Offer
Chas Hasley, a stall-holder at the Camera Fair on Sunday, has contacted Loveday to offer Epson packs and the Nova Jet Pro packs of inkjet paper at special rates. His list is quite long, so I am forwarding his e-mail separately. Please let him know direct if you'd like some.

A Date to Look Forward To
Declan Burge at the Cheese and Grain e-mails to say that the wildlife TV cameraman and presenter Gordon Buchanan (Family and Me, Planet Earth 2, Animals with Cameras). The evening will give audiences an opportunity to hear personal recollections of Gordon's globe-trotting travels as he delves into his world of weird, wild and wonderful wildlife, all illustrated with his own film footage and photography. At the Cheese and Grain, 7.30 pm on Wednesday November 7th.
